A Peek on Spain’s Music History and the Famous Flamenco
Music and dance often go hand in hand and are a big part of every country’s culture because it serves many different function for the people. Music presents an essential role in all country’s culture; it has been used for entertainment, religious expression, and a lot more.
Music played a vital role in the beginnings of all countries, including Spain; the Roman culture has been its basic influence for hundreds of years and it also paved the way for the introduction of Ancient Greek music. The Visigoths also arrived in Spain, came next were the Jews and the Moors; these various influences have led to Spain’s diverse musical styles and form. Because Spain’s geography had also affected her history, it’s only natural that each region of Spain offers a different variety or distinct music and dance culture; it would be more interesting for you to study this if you had a background on Spanish language and culture which can be given by short courses like those in Rocket Spanish websites. Rocket Spanish or Bust is a Computer Assisted Language Learning that can help you speak Spanish fluently.
May be part of the most famous music and dance type in Spain is the Flamenco which has already go around different countries all over the world. Ironically, Flamenco is actually not popular in all of Spain; it’s only popularin a certain points, particularly the Andalusian region of Spain and in a few of the smaller surrounding regions. However, a quick study of the history of Flamenco will show you that this couldn’t be farther from the truth; Flamenco is actually only popular in one part of Spain which is the Andalusian area.
Flamenco originated from the Andalusian regions and unlike to what is known today, it used to be only popular in the Andalusian regions and nowhere else in Spain. On the contrary, Flamenco is only popular just in one region of Spain; an autonomous community in Spain named Andalusia, which is regarded the largest in terms of land area in the country. The surprising fact is that numerous things is still unanswered about Flamenco as an art form.
The reason why Flamenco’s history is still very much shrouded in mystery is that the location where it was known was one of the poorest regions in Spain that time; not only that, the dance style of Flamenco was thought to be heavily influenced by Gypsy music. Studies also concludes that there’s an association between gypsy dance culture and the descendants of Moorish music in the 8th century until 17th century in the origins of Flamenco; still many also believe that apart from gypsy dance and Moorish music, there is also influence of music from Egypt, India, and the Byzantine church which played a big part in shaping this art form. Since Flamenco is being practiced by the poor, upper class society and historians did not exert much energy in recording and studying it, thus very little written records can be read about it. Another reason for difficulties in determining the origin of Flamenco is that the lower class people have no education and cannot write and they just kept the music through oral traditions; worst of all, the Jews, Muslims and Gitanos, which make up the lower class, were being persecuted throughout the period of Spanish Inquisition.
Researchers and historians, as well as experts our time are still trying to determine the exact roots and history of Flamenco; it’s not even clear where and how Flamenco got its name. Nonetheless, no one can erase the reality that Flamenco has a major role on the dance tradition all across the world.
