Kristin Chenoweth Music

By admin

What vocal classification am I?

I only did chorus once in 8th grade and I haven’t had any real training, but I sing by myself a lot and with my friends. I can match pitch almost perfectly but I can’t sight-read.
I can generally hit D3 to C7 without much warming-up, but my most comfortable range is B3 to A6.
I can always match Kristin Chenoweth’s notes (without her vibrato, of course) but I can’t always sing Idina Menzel’s belty lower notes quite the right way.
I think I might be a coloratura mezzo-soprano, but I’m not sure. And what part should I sing in non-classical music?
Thanks for your time!

Dear Jane:

Without actually hearing you sing it is somewhat difficult to say specifically what vocal catagory or classification you might fall into. Remeber too that as a voice age, especially when focusing on the classical vocal idiom, they will very often take on a darker timber a more dramatic color and sometimes a narrowing of range.

You compare your voice to Kristin Chenoweth who I would probably describe as a sort of pop-soubrette soprano. Also, the range you’ve indicated tells me that you may have a promising soprano voice – that is of course is assuming classical or semi-classical voice is the direction you want to go in. I do not know your age, but I suspect that if you are in your mid to late 20s you’ve got some good vocal years ahead of you, provided you care for your voice and don’t force it into music that is unhealthy for it. Also, it would perhaps benefit you greatly to find and work with a voice teacher that you like, respect and trust. Make sure though that this teacher is a voice builder and not just a vocal coach. There will be plenty of time for vocal coaches once you have a solid technique and you are at a point where you are working on repertoire – be it songs or roles. It does not serve you, the artist, or the music well at all to put the cart before the horse and start working on interpreting difficult repertoire without having a soild technique.

Finally. Don’t get hung up on classifications: “Am I a soprano?” “Am I a mezzo-soprano?” What matters the most is that you can sing and want to sing. Let me correct that, you need to sing. It’s something you must do. That’s the message you’re getting from deep down inside. Right? So do just that but do it carefully and with a heart full of love for the music.

All the very best,

Meredith Willson’s The Music Man (TV Film) [VHS]

$3.58

Meredith Willson’s musical masterpiece is such an American classic, it deserves to be known by each new generation–and this sprightly TV-movie version spiffs it up nicely for the young folk. It’s a testament to Willson’s achievement that this 2003 production can survive a casting flub: the usually engaging Matthew Broderick’s low-key charm is an exact mismatch for the brassy energy of travel…
