Sepultura – The Kings Of Death Metal

One of the stalwarts of the heavy metal rock scene is Sepultura who was formed in 1984 in Belo Horizonte in Brazil. There are now 11 Sepultura albums released to date. The band’s music has been categorized as death metal, thrash metal, and groove metal.

The band’s musical influence.

The band had listed some of the great names in metal rock as their inspiration, namely Led Zepellin, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC, and Deep Purple.

Sepultura’s History

Sepultura has had a number of band members, but among those that belonged during its early existence was Paulo Jr., Jairo Guedez, and the brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. In 1985 they released their first LP titled Bestial Devastation. It was soon followed by their very own record, Morbid Visions. It included their first major hit, “Troops of Doom”.

But Morbid Visions was not the ideal record for the band, or any band who got their first taste of having their own record. Because the songs in Morbid Visions were not professionally produced, resulting a lower quality sound and production. Even the band members have claimed that they failed to tune their guitars when they recorded the songs. However, the fact remains that the record helped Sepultura became more widely known.

After the release of their debut album, Jairo Guedez left the band and was soon replaced at lead guitar by Andreas Kisser. It was then that second of the Sepultura albums was released. They titled it Schizophrenia.

It was with Schizophrenia that the band had finally ventured into thrash metal. Previously, with Morbid Visions, they were primarily into death metal genre. Their second album proved to be a success in Brazil and there were bootleg copies of it that found their way into Europe.

By the time their third album, Beneath the Remains, was released the band had already gained some popularity. Proof of this is the demand for their band merch. They then embarked on their first international tour across the United States, Mexico, and Germany. It was during this tour that they met their music idols such as Metallica and Motorhead.

It was Arise, their fourth album, which finally landed their first hit single onto the Billboard 200 charts which ranked at no. 119. As a result, the band was recognized as among the best metal bands during that time.

But just like with other bands, Sepultura was trying its hands with other musical styles through their other Sepultura albums. For instance, their sixth album, Chaos A.D., the band’s sound was more of hardcore punk. And with the release of Roots, their sixth album, they put some combinations of death metal and thrash metal with the sound of Brazil’s indigenous people.

In 1996 Max Cavalera left the band with no statements as to the reason why he did so. Some years later his brother Igor also left Sepultura citing artistic incompatibility. Each of the Cavalera brothers had formed their own bands and are still actively playing and recording.

Their Sepultura merch is the result of the band’s decades long exposure as well as to their legions of fans who kept on collecting such great items to forever remember the band. Without any doubt, Sepultura is at the premier spot of the heavy metal champions.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade; Stravinsky: Song of the Nightingale [Hybrid SACD]

$7.20

This is a classic recording of these two works, led with grand authority by Fritz Reiner. The Chicago’s brass and wind section play gloriously throughout, and the final movement of Scheherazade (we learn from the original producer [1960] in an accompanying essay) was recorded in one take–an almost unheard-of feat. This fast movement is taken at breakneck speed, with no loss of clarity or power, w…

The Rugrats go to Las Vegas, where they are less interested in Rat Pack legacies than in liberating the “kitties in prison” they’ve seen in photographs. Six String Samurai [VHS]

As a genre-buster, Six-String Samurai–just your average, run-of-the-mill postapocalyptic kung-fu-rock & roll road movie–has a lot going for it. The film takes place in a Soviet-ruled America (they nuked the U.S. in 1957; with the exception of Lost Vegas [sic] and the badlands around it, the country is a Soviet territory). It revolves around Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon, who bears a remarkable resemblan…
